High Heels: My Rant
I don't wear high heels for the same reason I don't wear jewelry: mostly because I'm lazy.
However, reading that post (ps, Pursuit of Harpyness= a terrific blog) I've decided to officially make a stand on heel wearing. I officially pledge to never wear any. *
* Exceptions: costumes, if I'm in a wedding party and the bride says please, or if I don't own shoes that match a dress so I ask a friend to borrow some and the only one she has that match are heels.
Okay yes, I once was on a quest to find heels. But this quest petered out with me realizing I can get prettier flats for the same price, and also realizing I would never wear any heels that I bought anyway. And so that quest is now officially over.
I can't think of a time when heels would be NECESSARY. Thumbs down to the fashion industry, you guys. Men don't waste their money and time accessorizing; why should we? Other than one necklace that I occasionally wear (my sister made it for me, and it matches with everything) I don't even wear jewelry. I don't have my ears pierced. (Note: I will make an exception to no-ring-wearing when I get my Iron Ring)
Heels are expensive if you get the good ones, and the cheap ones are even worse on your body. Why oh why (other than hot legs or reasons related to fasion) would anybody wear heels? Are hot legs or reasons related to fashion worth foot pain, back pain, and loss of movement? I vote definitely no.
Who are your hot legs even for? Or what's with needing tall shoes to put together a certain look?
I like my height and I have enough leg/back issues as it is. Fuck heels.

AMEN. I only own two pairs of heels because they were cute and cheap and I like to look at them. Anyhow, so I wore one of the pairs to church on Sunday and when I came home, I was surprised that not only my calves hurt but (possibly TMI) my gluteus muscles were also killing me. Because of a stupid pair of shoes! And I've been reading He's A Stud, She's A Slut, because you once talked about it highly and it's so true! Totally not cool that guys get all the comfortable fashion choices. Maybe if I could find a pair of classic black heels that didn't kill my feets, legs, and ass, then it'd be worth it. But I don't think that's very likely.
(And there's my mini-rant. I had a lot more to say on the topic than I expected.)
Lisa, you know how tall I am. You can probably guess that I hate heels.
...well, until recently. I found their reason in life. Ballroom dancing. I wore flats for the first few weeks and rolled my eyes at my instructor whenever he shook his head at my footwear choice. But then I picked up a pair at value village because they were six dollars and had slippery bottoms. And GOD heels have a purpose in life. Make dancing soooo much easier (woman's part = walking backwards a lot). And I really don't mind being 6 feet + in a crowd of dancers.
I love heels because I think they're pretty, but I agree on how people should just wear whatever they want only because they want it. And I'm not into dressing up for other people either.
When I had plantar fasciitis (from running, no less), wearing heels really alleviated the pain b/c it took the pressure off of my heels during the day. I'm just sayin'. I love heels, but I don't wear cheap ones and I don't wear stilettos, but I know women who can without pain because that's how their feet and bodies work. Also just sayin'. :-)
I love you for writing this post. And, of course, I totally agree. :)
I'm not in love with heels by any means, but I think they just make a dressy/ work outfit. I've been wearing flats for the past week since I busted my knee and I just think my pants look funny.
Of course if I had more walking involved in my job than from the parking lot to my office I'm sure I would feel the same way you do.
I wore heels all day yesterday only b/c they were the only pair of shoes I own that matched the outfit I was wearing.
My feet are paying for this decision otday. :)
This is so interesting. My question would be, how do you define heels? For example today I am wearing boots with a 1-inch heel but I wouldn't call them heels... they are very sturdy and comfortable and also I've read that a 1-inch heel is optimal for your arches, though I don't know if that's true. Do you mean that every shoe you own has to be totally flat, or that you're not going to wear heels of the dressy, impractical Jimmy Choo variety?
I'm a flipflops, ballet slippers, and Chucks kind of girl myself. I can handle kitten heels when I really need something like that, but for the most part - I'm all about my feet flatly walking the earth. I will OCCASIONALLY bust a pair out, but can't go higher than an inch or so. Wedges are different. I can sport those.
I like heels (sometimes), because I feel like they make my barely-business-casual clothing look slightly more professional. I try to alternate wearing heels with wearing my "negative heel" shoes, though, because I'm paranoid about shortening my Achilles tendons. (Yes, I'm kind of a hypochondriac, how'd you guess?)
Wear what you like, is what I say.
i love heels, but if they're not for you, then no big deal! everyone should wear what they want on their feet
Speaking of high heels, one of my dear friends wrote this post of how one should walk in high heels. I know you're against high heels, but this post made me want to be a woman and walk in them.

i do like the way i look in heels, BUT i have verrrry bad ankles and feet so i can't wear the vast majority of sexy heels anyway. i am a devotee of aerosoles heels, which manage to be super-comfy and distribute your weight so that the balls of your feet don't want to die after 10 mins. and occasionally they even have cute styles. LURVE.
i am pretty anti heel too. i figure at 5'9" i'm tall enough, no need for heels.
I like. Bold.
Out of curiosity, do your views soften when talking to young women aspiring to wear heels?
If you're an atheist, what do you tell children when their pets die?
i can only wear kitten heels, an inch maybe two at most. i have two many sad pairs of high heels languishing in the wardrobe because my feet cant bear the pain!
Lise, You know I love you but once again we disagree. I absolutely love heels. Beyond the obvious fact that it makes my 5'2 self look like an adult and not a child but I love the way I feel in them. Granted, you need to find the right pair. My favourite pairs I could wear all day everyday if I didn't have to walk to class in piles of snow...and if University was more formal and we needed to dress up. I feel great in them. I like the way they make me look for me..not for anyone else. However, I come from a family of shoe obsessed women (and men, my dad must have 30 pairs of dress shoes alone). My mom has at least 100 pairs of heels and my cousin reached her peak at 300 a few years back. Actually. I come from the school of heel loving...conditioning? Maybe. But I don't mind the slight disadvantage I'm at when walking in terms of speed. I would not walk with them alone at night. I would not walk in them in an underground parking lot to get to my car. They have their limitations. But frankly, I never feel safe walking anywhere alone day or night heel or not. I feel put together when I'm wearing them. I love the way they feel when you find the perfect pair (hard to to when you have size 5.5 feet) something about me changes when I put them on.
But that's just my opinion :)
Purpun- I never considered dancing! Should I take up with the ballroom, maybe I will lift my ban.
Gillian- Did not consider treatment of injuries either!
Sheesheedarling (your new name)- I love you and I love your opinion. This post is just my opinion!
I know some men who spend more on their shoes, watches, etc. than I ever would on heels.
Yay! I love this post! I hate heels, always have and will only willingly buy them for things like weddings where they are expected. My own wedding shoes had a teeny tiny heel and that was enough for me. They came off immediately after the ceremony.
Heels are the bane of my existence. I always look and feel awkward in them... LOL
You also have to ask yourself, "When as an engineer will I be required to wear heels?" Actually, I do know of a girl in my class who wore heels on occasion in the welding lab.
Oh Lisa I adore you. I actually like wearing heels sometimes,... I'm super short and wearing heels just makes me feel more... I was going to say 'confident' but the word that I'm going to go with is 'taller'. With that said, I couldn't wear heels everyday... how can one play dodgeball in heels?!
me too lise. i'm all about wearing birkenstocks with my fancy dresses. COMFORT FIRST!
I love women wearing high heels showing off their legs and butt in a tight skirt. Teasing and seeking attention from men/women at the same time. Dirty sluts.
