New things coming up
After recent bouts of frustration due to "I wish more girls realized math was great and engineering is fun" I decided I should put my money where my mouth is. And my mouth I mean fingers (typing). And by money I mean time commitment.
So and few emails here and there, and then a phone screening this morning and let's do this, I am a volunteer mentor (well I still have to submit a police check or whatevskies but I don't have a criminal record that I know of so no sweat).
There are two positions I am considering. The first is a one-on-one type of mentorship where I hang out with a kid for an hour a week during school time. This one is more of a "provide academic, social and emotional support" type of thing, and the kid is elementary school age. The second is a group session (me and a few 12-14 year old girls) talking about promoting healthy lifestyles, and being balanced, and making plans, and gaining confidence.
I don't know which I'd rather do because I think I'd be better at one-on-one, but also that I'd be better with older girls. Blah, I don't even really care which one I do, I'm just really excited. I guess I'll do whichever is located closer to my house, on account of I don't have a car.
Anyway, I haven't been blogging much because I've been in bad moods left, right, and centre. And that is called not fun to read. However, I arrive home at 6:30pm on Saturday and Jack-man promised he'd pick me up from the airport. That's only 54 hours away!

That is awesome! And also, at first I thought you meant that the airport was 54 hours away from your house, and I was shocked.
I think the group of older girls would be fun!
Hi Lisa!
I discovered your blog a couple of days ago and love it!
I think it's a great idea to volunteer with the older girls, but the other option with only one kid is fine too...
I'm an engineer and come from Spain. In my university in Spain 1/3 were women, and I didn't really give it much thought. It felt so normal to me! But then I moved to Germany to finish my studies and work and...ough...let me tell you...I've experienced things I would've never believed as an engineering student.
I've even started to lose objectivity, and often have to mail my girlfriends in Spain to ask "this is not normal, right?".
OK, that's the bad news. The good news is that in high school and the first years of university I was never treated differently and there were lots of awesome girls studying the same I was and no one ever saw it as weird.
So those girls better start realizing that engineering IS cool ;-)
Oh, what a long comment...sorry...
Hope you have a lovely and safe flight home (woot Canada!!) Good for you for going out to make a difference - I think the older girls would be more fun too :)
You are going to be great at this! Can't wait to hear how it goes.
Considering I'm now spending a lot of time asking people if they want any work done that involves using math functions (in MS Excel), I get where you're from!
Also, I currently spend 2-3 hours a week volunteering with young kids and I just LOVE the way they think. I would say if you have a choice, go with the elementary school age kid.
ahhhhhh!!! Firstly I am so proud of you and secondly I am so excited to SEE YOUUUUU!!!!
xoxo
