The Gym

How much do you guys pay for gym memberships?

I'm paying 27.50 biweekly (math is hard, so I'll do it for you. $55/mo) and I thought that was kind of high, no?

I visited my local gym with the intention of buying a membership, and she did basically everything she could to make me consider changing my mind.

"And we have a towel service"
"Oh, that's handy!"
"Yeah, but it's $1 every time, which is totally stupid"
"Yeah... you're right"

"And in this room you see a class going on"
"Cool, looks fun"
"Yeah, but look how crowded it is. People are just squished!"
"Yeah... you're right"

"And over there is the sauna and the showers... which you can't really use unless you buy the towel service"
"Yeah... effin' $1,! What the hell, right?"

So obviously I'm boycotting the towels. But then what do I do if I go to the gym before work? Air dry? Bring my own and carry a wet towel around with me all day? Not shower? None of those options are very appealing.

Oh and then they have a different location that has a pool. Which is why I justified spending almost 60/mo on a membership- I'd save pool fees. They told me the other location was "right downtown". Yeah, no. I looked it up after I swiped my card and it's a good 15 minute subway ride from downtown. Which is like a 45 minute walk. Which means I have to take the subway which means I have to spend $2.75 each way. And if I'm doing that then I might as well rent 2 and 3/4s of a towel twice a day. The liars.

I don't have a gym membership (which could explain alot). Since I travel so much, I just use whatever the hotel floats my way.

p.s. I've been meaning to email you my votes for the 20s awards! Why don't you put me in for one vote for www.sixexits.com for all categories m'kay?

just kidding.

I pay $60/month for the Y in downtown Brooklyn, which INCLUDES towels (as many as I want! Every time I go!) and use of the awesome pool. Plus - good classes! So far I've taken yoga, cycling and belly dancing. They're not even crowded! Just one more reason why NY > Toronto. :-)

$60 is actually pretty good! I pay $85 a month, though it does include towels and classes. I think ALL gyms are crowded now because of the silly New Years Resolutioners (who will be gone in a month, might I add).

Hm. I just paid $140 for the semester - that amounts to I believe around 33 a month. Not bad. But it's through the university I work at, using my NYU ID.

Also. Can you possibly rent a locker for overnight storage? I used to dump my towel in there after letting it dry a bit. Once, I got caught in a horrendous downpour coming home from the gym - it happened to be laundry day, and I had my towel with me. I was pretty drenched. But I think I would have been more so, had I not had my trusty towel. *insert kickass empowering noise here*

I don't have a gym membership because the community gym is pretty good plus they have all sorts of classes and it is free , which makes it even better...60 dollars sound okay, but $1 for the towel service, kindda ridiculous...

yeah, $55 is kind of a lot. But at least that will make you go all the time, to get your money's worth...

$20/mo. towel service too...buttt they just haven't gotten the towels yet.

I pay $50 AU per fortnight (so equiv to around $45ish US$), but that gives me access to about 20 gyms across Sydney (dodgy suburban ones up to platinum city gyms).

And, can't you just take your own towel? That's what our gym does. Also includes classes. Includes lockers. Includes use of communal hairdryer. Includes the lot, really. Except clean toilets - they seem to struggle with that one.

oh, and there's no price you can put on your health.

Or is that teeth?

my gym is £40 monthly, which is like $70 US, and enough to buy a house in Australian pesos. And it's the suckiest gym ever, they have one tiny spin room, one tiny studio, and everythings always broken - the stereos, heating in the changerooms, cooling in the workout rooms, the one stairmaster, even the free drinks dispenser is always broken (which I prefer to it's previous state of dispensing suspect black flakes in the drinks).
I hate it, but I'm stuck on this frigging contract and I'd have to pay out something like £400 ($700 dollars?) to cancel it. Grr!

Wow. That's an insane gym. I pay $39 a month but that's for Curves so...I don't get all the cool stuff like a pool or a workout that isn't entirely women :)

My gym is about $20 a month as I've been there forever and it went down...but I have no pool although the other facility not close to me does - it used to tbe an old Crunch Gym so it's cool and well equipped.

nonblondie, 40 pounds is currently like $90 USD! Ouch!

I paid $60/mo, but the gym is 24 hours, offers yoga, pilates and other classes, all the towels I want, two indoor pools, two outdoor pools, a water slide, wet and dry saunas, free hairdryer and a better shower than I have at home.

So it's worth it. Sometimes I just go there and eat at the cafe (the food is phenomenal).

I actually mooch off my parent's gym membership (apparently I can do this until I'm 24 or 25). If I couldn't do that, I have NO idea how I'd even go about finding a gym. For $55 a month, though, I feel like you should definitely get free towels!

In NYC I used to pay $69 a month, so I really don't think $55 is too bad!

i pay $70 for the gym i had no intention of using for a year and a gym that i don't use. When i signed up i thought it was month to month but no no, i'm stuck for a year.

Otherwise, my gym membership is actually free since i work at the one nearest to my house and boyfriend also gets a 50% discount off an otherwise $97/month membership. I guess paying $70/month isn't that bad afterall...

I pay $40 a month. When I went Monday, it was CROOOOWDED from all the people with resolutions! I didn't want to have to fight someone for a treadmill!

I pay around $90/month for the gym because New York is evil.

I was about to post the exact same thing that Clink did, "I pay $90 because New York is evil."

I, like Clink and Sass, pay 90 a month because New York is evil.

That whole towel thing with your gym is a total way to jack up their prices...ridic!

I pay less than $30/mo, I can use any of their locations all of them open 24hrs (in the US or worldwide) use any pool or take any classes at any location.

But no towel service, and not all locations have a pool.

We have a gym in the compound. The expense is built into our association fees so I like to think that it's free. It smells like man ass though. Kidding. I've never actually been there. I plan on changing that soon. SOON.

I pay about 35$ a month which isn't too bad. And the classes are free too, which is nice. I'm starting to really like going to the gym...surprisingly.

Mine's $165/year at the rec center of the university where I work. And free towels!

I pay 33 pounds a month but apparently that must be cheap for my gym cos me and my sis have joint membership which is meant to make it less money! The only good thing is we get a loan of a towel every time we come. But given I havent been in four months, its not exactly value for money no matter how much it is!!!

I pay 30 bucks a month... but it doesn't come with classes or anything... when I worked in a bigger city I paid 30 a month and got classes... sauna... everything. That was awesome.

Princess Pointful said...

I pay around $35-40 a month, I believe... but no pool or sauna.
